They Might Be Touring

Introduction

The venue selection in DC is pretty interesting, but the 9:30 Club is sort of a mainstay in the alternative and/or indie grounds. I was looking to buy tickets for Gogol Bordello, but I saw that They Might Be Giants was playing and quickly scrapped those plans and decided to splurge.

Did I ever tell you when I ran into John Linnell? I was waiting outside before the show, and the tour bus was parked on that street. Linnell walked out and was about 30-50cm away from me. He walked RIGHT PAST ME with a weird smile, and I stared at him with big eyes, like a deer caught in headlights. I assume he went inside to get a drink, and when he came back the girl in front of me said I should say hi, and I meekly called out “Hi John-”. He obviously didn't hear me, so I added “-who is ignoring me...” It was futile but amazing! I think that was the best part of the show. That and the confetti.

Something that I thought was unusual about this show was the coupling. I stood between two couples in line, and met a strange couple that hated each other in high school but having met each other for the first time since graduation, were showing a lot of affection. Perchance they are dating now?

The crowd was definitely more nerd-friendly than most, but I suppose that people that like TMBG are automatically some kind of nerd. It provided a nice and friendly atmosphere... but having lived in a TMBG vacuum of 90's-ness, it was a bit difficult the whole show because I wasn't too familiar with everything. Luckily, a lot of the songs were new and so I didn't feel so bad. This is also the show I met Thibeaux at, so I suppose it holds some significance. The worst part were the people that I thought were scenesters in front of me that turned to be hardcore indie kids who loved TMBG.
